      Formula

Fuel per year = miles per year ÷ mpg × price per gallon
Total per year = fuel + insurance + maintenance + depreciation + other costs
Cost per mile = total per year ÷ miles per year

      How to use it

      1. Enter the distance you drive in a year.
      2. Enter your fuel economy and the fuel price.
      3. Enter each yearly ownership cost; estimates are fine.
      4. Read the cost per mile and the yearly and monthly totals.

      The costs people forget

Fuel is the cost you see every week, but it is usually well under a third of the total. Depreciation — the value the car loses each year — is typically the single largest cost of a newer car, followed by insurance. If you have a loan, add the interest to the depreciation figure.

Fixed costs are spread over the miles you drive, so cost per mile falls as mileage rises: the same car costs far more per mile at 6,000 miles a year than at 15,000.

      Benchmarks

The IRS standard mileage rate for business driving is a useful reference point for the all-in cost of running a typical car; it was 67 cents a mile for 2024 and is revised each year. Fuel alone at 28 mpg and $3.50 a gallon is 12.5 cents a mile.

An older car that has finished depreciating can cost much less per mile even with higher repair bills.

      Questions people ask

How do I calculate cost per mile for my car?

Add up everything you spend on the car in a year, including fuel, insurance, maintenance, depreciation and fees, and divide by the miles driven. $8,600 a year over 12,000 miles is about 72 cents a mile.

How much does gas cost per mile?

Divide the price per gallon by your mpg. At $3.50 and 28 mpg that is 12.5 cents a mile; at 20 mpg it is 17.5 cents.

What is a typical cost per mile to own a car?

For a newer car driven about 12,000–15,000 miles a year, somewhere around 55 to 80 cents a mile once depreciation and insurance are included. Fuel alone is usually 10–20 cents of that.
