Why the due date is a window
Gestation in dogs averages 63 days from ovulation, with little variation. But mating does not have to coincide with ovulation — sperm can survive for several days and eggs take time to mature — so counted from the mating date, birth normally falls anywhere from about day 58 to day 68.
If your vet timed ovulation with progesterone tests, a much more precise due date is possible: about 63 days after ovulation.
Key dates along the way
A vet can usually confirm pregnancy by ultrasound from around day 25 to 35. An X-ray becomes useful from about day 55, once the puppies’ skeletons show clearly, and is the reliable way to count them so you know when whelping is finished.
In the last week, many breeders take the dog’s rectal temperature twice a day; a drop below about 99–100 °F (37.2–37.8 °C) usually means labor will begin within 24 hours.
When to call the vet
This calculator gives estimated dates and is not veterinary advice. Contact your vet promptly if your dog goes past day 68 without labor, strains hard for more than 30 minutes without producing a puppy, goes more than two hours between puppies, or seems unwell at any point in the pregnancy.
