When the weights do not add up to 100
If you leave out work that has not been graded, the weights entered will total less than 100%. The grade shown is then your average on everything graded so far — the same figure most online gradebooks display mid-term. “Points earned toward the course” shows what you have locked in out of the full 100.
Letter grade scale used
A+ is 97 and up, A 93, A− 90, B+ 87, B 83, B− 80, C+ 77, C 73, C− 70, D+ 67, D 63, D− 60, and below 60 is an F. This is the most common US scale, but instructors set their own cut-offs and rounding, so check the syllabus.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight. Homework 90 at 20%, quizzes 85 at 20%, midterm 78 at 25% and final 88 at 35% gives 18 + 17 + 19.5 + 30.8 = 85.3%.
My course uses points instead of weights. What do I enter?
In a total-points course, your grade is points earned ÷ points possible. Enter each category’s percentage and use its share of the total points as the weight.
What will my grade be after the final?
Add the final as another row with its weight and a guessed score, or use the final grade calculator to find the score you need.
