      Formula

      Monthly rate i = (1 + APY)^(1/12) − 1, number of months m = years × 12
      Still needed = goal − current savings × (1 + i)^m
      Monthly deposit = still needed × i ÷ ((1 + i)^m − 1)
With no interest: monthly deposit = (goal − current savings) ÷ m

      How to use it

      1. Enter the goal amount and what you have saved toward it so far.
      2. Enter how many years you have; use a decimal such as 1.5 for 18 months.
      3. Enter your account’s APY, or 0 to ignore interest.
      4. Set up an automatic transfer for the monthly amount shown.

      Making the number workable

If the monthly figure is too high, the deadline has the biggest effect: $12,000 takes $500 a month over two years but $333.33 over three. Interest helps only a little over short periods, so for goals under about three years a high-yield savings account or CD is a more sensible home than the stock market.

Deposits are assumed to be made at the end of each month.

      Questions people ask

How much do I need to save a month to reach $20,000 in 3 years?

With $2,000 already saved and a 4% APY account, $465.38 a month (about $107.40 a week). You deposit $16,753.84 and interest covers the remaining $1,246.16.

$500 a month with no interest, or about $115.38 a week.

How much per month to save $10,000 in a year?
