      Formula

Listening time = original length ÷ playback speed
Time saved = original length − listening time
      Time cut % = (1 − 1 ÷ speed) × 100
Days to finish = listening time ÷ listening time per day

      How to use it

      1. Enter the length in hours and minutes.
      2. Enter the playback speed, such as 1.25, 1.5 or 2.
      3. Enter how many minutes you listen on a typical day.
      4. Read the new listening time and how long it will take to finish.

      How much each speed saves

1.25× cuts listening time by 20%. 1.5× cuts it by a third. 1.75× cuts it by 43%, 2× halves it and 3× cuts it by two thirds. The gains shrink as you go faster: moving from 1× to 1.5× saves 20 minutes of every hour, but moving from 1.5× to 2× saves only 10 more.

      A 10-hour audiobook takes 8 hours at 1.25×, 6 hours 40 minutes at 1.5×, 5 hours 43 minutes at 1.75× and 5 hours at 2×.

      Finding a comfortable speed

Audiobook narrators typically read at about 150 words a minute, noticeably slower than normal conversation, which is why many listeners find 1.25× to 1.5× comfortable. Build up gradually — a small step feels fast for a few minutes and then sounds normal.

Slow down for dense material, unfamiliar accents or anything you need to remember. The same arithmetic works below 1×: at 0.75×, a 60-minute recording takes 80 minutes.
