Why bonuses look heavily taxed
In the US, employers commonly withhold a flat 22% federal rate on bonuses, plus 7.65% for Social Security and Medicare, plus state tax. That is withholding, not the final tax: a bonus is ordinary income, and if too much was withheld you get the difference back when you file.
