The CPC you can afford
Work backwards from what a customer is worth. If a sale brings $40 of gross profit and 2.5% of clicks convert, each click is worth $40 × 0.025 = $1.00. Paying more than that per click loses money on the first sale.
Improving the conversion rate has the same effect as cutting CPC: doubling it from 2.5% to 5% halves your cost per conversion.
Average and maximum CPC
On auction platforms you set a maximum bid, but usually pay less — just enough to beat the next advertiser. The average CPC reported, and calculated here, is total spend divided by total clicks.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate cost per click?
Divide total ad spend by the number of clicks. $100 for 250 clicks is $0.40 per click.
How do I get CPC from CPM?
CPC = CPM ÷ (1,000 × CTR). With a $10 CPM and a 2% click-through rate: $10 ÷ 20 = $0.50 per click.
What is the difference between CPC and CPA?
CPC is the cost of a click; CPA (cost per acquisition) is the cost of a conversion. CPA = CPC ÷ conversion rate, so a $0.40 click converting at 2.5% costs $16 per conversion.
