How CPM relates to CPC and CTR

The three are tied together: CPM = CPC × CTR × 1,000, with CTR as a decimal. An ad with a $0.50 cost per click and a 2% click-through rate has an effective CPM of $10.

That makes CPM a useful common yardstick. You can compare a campaign billed per click with one billed per impression by converting both to effective CPM (eCPM).

      What drives CPM

CPM is set by auction on most platforms, so it rises with competition: narrow or high-income audiences, premium placements, video formats, and the weeks before major holidays all push it up. Broad audiences and display banners sit at the cheap end.

      Questions people ask

      What does CPM stand for?

Cost per mille — cost per thousand impressions. A $5 CPM means you pay $5 each time your ad is shown 1,000 times.

How much do 50,000 impressions cost at a $10 CPM?

$500. Divide the impressions by 1,000 and multiply by the CPM: 50 × $10.

      How do I calculate CPM?

Divide the cost by the impressions and multiply by 1,000. $500 for 200,000 impressions is a $2.50 CPM.
