      Formula

Cubic feet = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft)
      Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27
With depth in inches: cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 324

      How to use it

      1. Choose a rectangle, circle or triangle.
      2. Enter the dimensions, picking the unit next to each field.
      3. Enter the depth and the number of identical areas.
      4. Read the volume; switch the result unit to see cubic meters or liters.

      Why 27 and 324

A yard is 3 feet, so a cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet. When the depth is in inches you divide by 12 as well, and 27 × 12 = 324, which is where the shortcut comes from.

One cubic yard is 0.7646 cubic meters, 764.6 liters or about 202 US gallons.

      Coverage of one cubic yard

A cubic yard covers 324 sq ft at 1 in deep, 162 sq ft at 2 in, 108 sq ft at 3 in, 81 sq ft at 4 in and 54 sq ft at 6 in.

      Questions people ask

How do I calculate cubic yards?

Multiply length × width × depth in feet and divide by 27. A 10 × 10 ft area 6 in (0.5 ft) deep is 50 cubic feet, which is 1.85 cubic yards.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?

      27 cubic feet.

How much does a cubic yard cover at 3 inches deep?

      108 square feet, for example a 9 × 12 ft area.
