Volume Calculator
Choose a solid shape and enter its dimensions to find how much space it takes up or how much it holds. Enter each dimension in its own unit and read the volume in cubic feet, cubic inches, cubic yards, liters or US gallons.
- Formula used
- Volume = length × width × height

Formula
How to use it
- Choose the shape.
- Enter the dimensions. Use the radius — half the diameter — for round shapes.
- Pick the output unit: cubic units for space, gallons or liters for liquids.
Worked examples
A 10 × 8 × 4 ft box: 320 ft³, which is 9,061.39 liters
- Volume
- 320 ft³
A cylinder 1 m in radius and 2 m tall: 6.283 m³
- Volume
- 6.28 m³
A ball with a 50 cm radius: 523.6 liters
- Volume
- 523.6 L
Volume conversions worth knowing
1 cubic foot is 1,728 cubic inches and holds about 7.48 US gallons. 1 cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. 1 US gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches. 1 liter is 1,000 cubic centimeters, and 1 cubic meter is 1,000 liters.
Inside or outside measurements
For capacity — how much a tank, box or pot holds — measure the inside. Outside measurements include the wall thickness and overstate what fits.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate cubic feet?
Multiply length × width × height, all in feet. A box 10 ft × 8 ft × 4 ft is 320 cubic feet. If you measured in inches, divide the result by 1,728.
How many gallons are in a cubic foot?
About 7.48 US gallons. Switch the result unit to gallons and the conversion is done for you.
Why is a cone one third of a cylinder?
A cone with the same base and height as a cylinder holds exactly one third as much, which is why its formula is the cylinder formula divided by 3. The same holds for a pyramid and a box.
