Average Calculator

Paste or type a list of numbers to get their average. Along with the arithmetic mean you get the sum, the count and the median, plus the geometric and harmonic means for the cases where the ordinary average is the wrong tool.

      Formula

Average (arithmetic mean) = sum of the values ÷ number of values
Geometric mean = the nth root of (x₁ × x₂ × … × xₙ)
      Harmonic mean = n ÷ (1/x₁ + 1/x₂ + … + 1/xₙ)

      How to use it

      1. Type or paste your numbers, separated by commas, spaces or new lines.
      2. Read the average.
      3. Check the count to make sure every number was picked up.

      Which average to use

The arithmetic mean suits most everyday questions — test scores, monthly bills, temperatures. When a few extreme values distort it, the median is a better picture of a typical value.

Use the geometric mean for growth rates and ratios: growth of 10% one year and 50% the next averages √(1.10 × 1.50) = 1.2845, or 28.45% a year, not 30%.

Use the harmonic mean for rates over equal distances: driving out at 30 mph and back at 60 mph averages 40 mph, not 45. For positive numbers the harmonic mean is never larger than the geometric mean, which is never larger than the arithmetic mean.

      Questions people ask

      What is the average of 85, 90, 78, 92 and 88?

      86.6. The sum is 433, and 433 ÷ 5 = 86.6.

How do you calculate an average?

Add all the values together and divide by how many there are.

What is the average of 2, 4 and 8?

      The arithmetic mean is 4.67 (14 ÷ 3). The geometric mean is exactly 4, because 2 × 4 × 8 = 64 and the cube root of 64 is 4.
