      Formula

      Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100
      Each person pays = (bill + tip) ÷ number of people
      With rounding: each share is rounded up to the next whole dollar
      Extra collected = rounded share × people − (bill + tip)

      2. Enter the tip percentage, or 0 if service is included.

      When an even split is not fair

      Splitting evenly is quickest and works well when everyone ordered roughly the same. When one person had three cocktails and another had a salad, it is fairer to let each person pay for what they ordered and share only the common items — appetizers, a bottle of wine — plus tax and tip in proportion.

      A simple middle ground: split the food evenly, and have the drinkers divide the bar tab among themselves.

      Tax and tip on separate checks

      If people are paying for their own items, each person’s share of tax and tip is their subtotal times the same percentages. Someone whose items come to $30 of a $120 bill owes a quarter of the tax and a quarter of the tip.

      Questions people ask

      How do you split a $120 bill four ways with an 18% tip?

      The tip is $21.60, making $141.60 in total, so each person pays $35.40.

      Should the tip be split evenly too?

      If the bill is split evenly, yes. If people pay for what they ordered, each should tip on their own share.

      What happens to the extra when shares are rounded up?

      It goes to the server as extra tip. Rounding three shares of $35.04 up to $36 collects $2.88 more than the bill plus tip.
