      Formula

      Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100
      Total = bill + tip
      Each person pays = total ÷ number of people
      With rounding: the total (or each share) is rounded up, and the extra goes to the tip

      2. Enter the tip percentage, or tap 15%, 18% or 20%.
      3. Enter how many people are splitting it.

      How much to tip in the US

      At sit-down restaurants, 15–20% of the bill is the norm, with 18–20% now the most common range for good service. Bartenders are usually tipped $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab, and food delivery drivers 15–20% with a few dollars as a minimum.

      Etiquette guides base the tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people simply tip on the total. On a $60 meal with 8% tax, the difference at 20% is under a dollar.

      Quick mental math

      Move the decimal point one place left for 10%: $47.50 becomes $4.75. Double it for 20% ($9.50). For 15%, add half of the 10% figure to itself ($4.75 + $2.38 = $7.13).

      Outside the US

      Tipping customs vary widely. In much of Europe a service charge is already included and rounding up or leaving 5–10% is plenty; in Japan tipping is generally not expected. Check the bill for a service charge before adding a tip.

      Questions people ask

      How much is a 20% tip on $50?

      $10, for a total of $60.

      How much is an 18% tip on $60?

      $10.80, for a total of $70.80.

      Do you tip before or after tax?

      Traditionally on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax is not part of the service. Tipping on the after-tax total is also common and only slightly more generous.

      How do I calculate a 15% tip quickly?

      Take 10% by moving the decimal point, then add half of that again. On $40: $4 + $2 = $6.
