WHO adult categories
Under 18.5 is underweight. 18.5 to 24.9 is normal weight. 25.0 to 29.9 is overweight. 30.0 to 34.9 is obesity class I, 35.0 to 39.9 is class II, and 40 or more is class III. The same cut-offs apply to men and women aged 20 and over.
What BMI cannot tell you
BMI compares weight with height and nothing else. It cannot tell muscle from fat, so muscular athletes often score as overweight while carrying little fat. Older adults who have lost muscle can score as normal while carrying more fat than the number suggests.
It does not apply during pregnancy, and children and teenagers are assessed with age- and sex-specific percentile charts rather than these fixed cut-offs. Where fat sits matters too, which is why waist measurements are often used alongside BMI.
This is an estimate for general information, not medical advice. Talk to a doctor or other qualified clinician before making health decisions based on it.
Questions people ask
What is the BMI for 5 ft 9 in and 160 lb?
23.6, which is in the normal weight category. At 5 ft 9 in the healthy range runs from about 125 lb to 169 lb.
What BMI is considered overweight?
A BMI of 25.0 to 29.9 is classed as overweight by the WHO, and 30 or above as obesity. For someone 5 ft 9 in tall, a BMI of 25 is about 169 lb.
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Often not. BMI counts muscle the same as fat, so a lean, muscular person can land in the overweight band. A body fat estimate or waist-to-height ratio gives a better picture in that case.
