Why the formulas disagree
None of them was derived to define a healthy weight. Hamwi published his in 1964 as a quick rule for clinicians; Devine’s 1974 formula was written to estimate drug doses, and Robinson and Miller proposed adjustments in 1983. Each is a straight line through height, so they drift apart for people who are much taller or shorter than average, and below 5 ft they are an extrapolation.
They also ignore age, frame size and muscle. The healthy BMI range — nearly 45 lb wide at 5 ft 10 in — is a more honest picture of how much healthy weights vary.
This is an estimate for general information, not medical advice. Talk to a doctor or other qualified clinician before making health decisions based on it.
Questions people ask
What is the ideal weight for a 5 ft 10 in man?
Devine gives 73 kg (about 161 lb), Robinson 71 kg, Miller 70.3 kg and Hamwi 75 kg. The healthy BMI range at that height is about 129 to 174 lb.
What is the ideal weight for a 5 ft 4 in woman?
Devine gives 54.7 kg (about 121 lb), Robinson 55.8 kg, Miller 58.5 kg and Hamwi 54.3 kg. The healthy BMI range is about 108 to 145 lb.
Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?
None is accurate for an individual — they are height-only rules of thumb. Devine is the one most widely used in medicine, mainly for dosing calculations.
