Stacked discounts do not add up
“30% off, plus an extra 20% off” is not 50% off. The second discount applies to the already reduced price: 30% off $120 is $84, and 20% off $84 is $67.20. The total discount is 44%.
The combined rate is 1 − (1 − first) × (1 − second). The order makes no difference to the final price: 20% then 30% gives the same $67.20.
Tax comes after the discount
In most US states, sales tax is charged on the price you actually pay after a store discount or store coupon. Manufacturer coupons are often treated differently — the tax may be due on the full price — so a receipt can come out a few cents higher than this calculator shows.

How much is 20% off $50?
$40. The discount is $10 (20% of $50).
How much is 25% off $80?
$60. You save $20.
What is 30% off plus an extra 20% off?
44% off in total. On a $120 item you pay $67.20, not the $60 a straight 50% off would give.
Is 50% off plus another 50% off free?
No. The second 50% is taken from the half that is left, so you pay 25% of the original price — a total discount of 75%.
