Percent Off Calculator

Three questions in one tool: what a price comes to after a percent off, what percent off a markdown really is, and what the original price was before the discount. You can also stack an extra coupon and add sales tax.

      Formula

      Sale price = original price × (1 − percent off ÷ 100)
Percent off = (original price − sale price) ÷ original price × 100
      Original price = sale price ÷ (1 − percent off ÷ 100)
      You pay = sale price × (1 − extra percent off ÷ 100) × (1 + sales tax ÷ 100)

      How to use it

      1. Choose what you want to find: the sale price, the percent off, or the original price.
      2. Enter the two numbers you know.
      3. Add an extra percent off if a coupon stacks on top of the sale.
      4. Add sales tax if you want the amount at the register.

      Mental shortcuts

For 10% off, move the decimal point one place left and subtract: 10% of $64 is $6.40. 20% is double that, 5% is half of it, and 15% is the two added together.

For 25% off, divide by four and subtract. For 33% off, divide by three. For 50% off, halve it.

Percentages are reversible: 8% of 50 is the same as 50% of 8, which is 4. Swap the numbers when one way round is easier.

      Finding the original price

You cannot get back to the original price by adding the percentage to the sale price. If an item is $45 after 25% off, adding 25% gives $56.25, which is wrong. The sale price is 75% of the original, so divide: $45 ÷ 0.75 = $60.
