      Formula

      Percent decrease = (original value − new value) ÷ |original value| × 100
      New value = original value × (1 − percent ÷ 100)
Amount of decrease = original value × percent ÷ 100

      How to use it

      1. Choose whether you are finding the percentage or applying one.
      2. Enter the original value.
      3. Enter either the new, lower value or the percentage to remove.
      4. Read the percent decrease, the new value and the amount of the decrease.

      Recovering from a decrease

A decrease needs a larger percent increase to undo it. After a 25% drop you need a 33.33% rise to get back; after a 50% drop you need 100%.

      Stacked reductions

Two reductions in a row do not add. 20% off followed by another 10% off leaves 0.80 × 0.90 = 0.72 of the price, which is 28% off in total, not 30%.

A positive quantity cannot fall by more than 100% — a 100% decrease takes it to zero.
