mL to Grams Calculator

Milliliters measure volume and grams measure weight, so the conversion depends on how dense the ingredient is. Pick an ingredient and enter a volume to get its weight — or enter a weight to get the volume. For water the two numbers are the same; for almost everything else they are not.

      Formula

      Grams = milliliters × density (g/mL)
      Milliliters = grams ÷ density (g/mL)

      How to use it

      1. Choose whether you are converting mL to grams or grams to mL.
      2. Pick the ingredient.
      3. Enter the volume or the weight.
      4. Read the result and the density that was used.

      Densities used here

      In grams per milliliter: water 1.00, milk 1.03, vegetable or olive oil 0.92, honey 1.43, butter 0.96, granulated sugar 0.85, packed brown sugar 0.93, powdered sugar 0.51, all-purpose flour 0.51, uncooked white rice 0.78, rolled oats 0.34, cocoa powder 0.36, table salt 1.23.

      These are averages. Liquids are consistent, but powders and grains depend on how tightly they are packed — the figures assume ingredients spooned in loosely and leveled. Temperature shifts liquid densities very slightly.

      Only water is one-to-one

      One milliliter of water weighs one gram, which is how the metric system was designed. Oil is lighter, so 100 mL weighs only 92 g and it floats. Honey is far heavier: 100 mL weighs 143 g. Flour is mostly air between the particles, so 100 mL weighs barely 51 g.

      This is why recipes that list liquids in milliliters and dry goods in grams should be followed as written rather than swapping one for the other.

      Questions people ask

      Is 1 mL equal to 1 gram?

      Only for water, and near enough for thin water-based liquids. Milk is about 1.03 g per mL, oil about 0.92 g, honey about 1.43 g.

      How many grams is 100 mL of milk?

      About 103 g.

      How many grams is 250 mL of flour?

      About 127 g of all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled.

      How many grams is 100 mL of oil?

      About 92 g for vegetable or olive oil.
