Pool Volume Calculator

Find how many gallons or liters your swimming pool holds. Choose a rectangular, round or oval pool, enter its dimensions and the depth at the shallow and deep ends, and the calculator uses the average depth.

Quick examples

Water depth, not wall height.

Enter the same depth twice for a flat-bottomed pool.

      Formula

Average depth = (shallow depth + deep depth) ÷ 2
Rectangular: volume = length × width × average depth
      Round: volume = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × average depth
      Oval: volume = π ÷ 4 × length × width × average depth
      US gallons = cubic feet × 7.48

      How to use it

      1. Choose the pool shape.
      2. Enter the length and width, or the diameter.
      3. Enter the water depth at the shallow and deep ends.
      4. Read the volume and switch the unit to liters or cubic meters if you need it.

      Why volume matters

Every chemical dose — chlorine, shock, pH adjusters, algaecide, salt — is given per 10,000 gallons or per 10,000 liters, so an accurate volume keeps you from over- or under-treating. It also tells you what size pump, filter and heater the pool needs.

Measure water depth, not wall height. An above-ground pool with 52 in walls typically holds about 48 in of water.

      Shortcuts and limits

In feet, the quick multipliers are: rectangular pools, length × width × average depth × 7.5; round pools, diameter × diameter × depth × 5.9. This calculator treats an oval as a true ellipse; pool charts for flat-sided ovals often use a slightly larger factor (length × width × depth × 6.7), so expect a figure up to about 14% higher from those.

Averaging the two depths assumes an evenly sloping floor. A pool with a short deep hopper and a long shallow end holds less than this estimate; for those, calculate the sections separately and add them.

      Questions people ask

How many gallons are in a 16×32 pool?

With a 3.5 ft shallow end and an 8 ft deep end (5.75 ft average), a 16 × 32 ft pool holds about 22,000 gallons, or 83,400 liters.

How many gallons are in an 18 ft round pool?

With 4 ft of water, about 7,600 gallons (28,800 liters).

How many gallons are in a cubic foot of water?

7.48 US gallons, weighing about 62.4 lb.
