A worked example
1 1/2 + 2 2/3: convert to 3/2 and 8/3. Over a common denominator of 6 that is 9/6 + 16/6 = 25/6. Then 25 ÷ 6 = 4 remainder 1, so the answer is 4 1/6.
Mistakes to avoid
When multiplying, do not multiply the whole numbers and the fractions separately. 2 1/2 × 1 1/3 is 5/2 × 4/3 = 20/6 = 3 1/3, not 2 1/6.
A negative mixed number is negative all the way through: −1 1/2 means −(1 + 1/2) = −3/2, not −1 + 1/2. Enter the whole number as −1 and leave the fraction positive.
