Formula
How to use it
- Enter the numerator and the denominator.
- For a mixed number such as 2 1/7, put 2 in the whole-number field; otherwise leave it at 0.
- Read the decimal. In the exact form, digits in parentheses repeat forever: 0.8(3) means 0.8333…

Terminating or repeating?
Reduce the fraction first. If the denominator then has no prime factors other than 2 and 5, the decimal ends: 3/8 = 0.375 and 7/20 = 0.35. Any other denominator gives a decimal that repeats: 1/3 = 0.(3), 5/6 = 0.8(3).
The repeating block can never be longer than the denominator minus one. 1/7 = 0.(142857) uses the full six digits; 1/97 has a block 96 digits long.
